Much ado about....a Yoga mat...

November 1, 2017

Ah....the Yoga mat...so much more than just a yoga accessory, an extension of your practice really.

I have a little problem when it comes to yoga and summer. Problem is that I slip all over the place making my downward dog look a little more slippery snake like. Sweaty summer and yoga mats...it is a real problem. But what I learned last week - Summer well over with and enough rain for a monsoon here in Austria - even without the heat factor some mats are just slippery no matter how much your hands (or feet for that matter) are sweating.

Teaching a yoga class and slipping all over the place I decided to kick said yoga mat to the side and continued my lesson on the very uncomfortable carpet (a much better trade off despite its itchiness).

So even though this problem is not the biggest on many people`s list (probably very far down on your list) I bet that at least 10 times a year whilst in your Camatkarasana (wild thing pose) or your Adho Mukha Svanasana (downward dog) you wish you had finally just put that extra dime in a non slip mat! It happens to me all the time...but yeah, I still haven`t gone out there and gotten a new mat...

That brings the question, we know that some mats are just slippery, OK. So are we going to work our way through our wallets and the internet trolling through mats until we find the right one? Nah, I don`t think so. It just so happens that someone out there has already done all the leg (or downward dog) work needed to find the right mat....http://www.reviews.com/best-yoga-mat/

In this VERY comprehensive review the team at reviews.com tested 30 different yoga mats for different yoga styles and settings, chatting to different Yoga instructors, consulting Yoga publications and different temperature settings. Seriously - Thank you! All that hard work (Yoga on different types of material for research purposes- BLISS!)

Have a look at the article, I must admit though that I was not surprised at who ranked best on their list...It is the same mat I keep promising myself I will get when I slip and slip off my own, Christmas is on the way...hmmm, maybe this year :)

And for a little bit of a laugh, have a look at what the Ultra Spiritual JP Sears has to say about Yoga accessories.
